Product review & giveaway: Wonder Bread

This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Wonder®.

The folks at Wonder asked us to do a taste test between three good sources of calcium: Wonder® bread, spinach, and red beans. You know how much we like taste tests around here, so we agreed in a heart beat.

DSC_4280

On the day of the test, I arranged some cute pottery plates and bowls and offered the girls cooked spinach (with a little butter and seasoning), red beans, and a slice of Wonder bread and asked them to taste everything.

The Official Results:
The girls preferred the Wonder bread hands down. I figured they might turn up their noses at the spinach, but was kind of surprised that my little legume-lovers weren't even tempted by the red beans. Interesting... It was also interesting to find out that Wonder bread has some seriously pumped up calcium levels—two slices have as much calcium as a glass of milk. I always figured that bread had a bunch of nutrients and carbs and all that, but never checked to see that some brands had calcium too (seriously, when I'm in the grocery store with the twinados, my only goal is to get in and out as fast as humanly possible and without injury to ourselves or innocent bystanders, there is no time for label reading). Just for kicks, I compared the Wonder bread against our family's standby bread, and a slice of Wonder has 15% of your daily calcium, while our old fave has 4%. Oh.

The Bottom Line:
The kids loved it, and I like that I can give it instead of milk on days when their sensitive little stomachs are just not tolerating dairy products (yes we have gastro issues galore in this house). The adults preferred the Wonder bread over the spinach and red beans, but didn't prefer it over our family's standby bread.

Areas for Improvement:
I think the Wonder bread is great for kids, but how about a hearty, seedy version that adults would go for? I'm a sucker for those local bakery loafs that are so heavy and have so many seeds that they pop off while you're trying to butter them. Mmmmmm, that's what I'm always trying to get close to with my grocery-store bread.

Giveaway for $100 plus a year of Wonder bread:
The folks at Wonder are giving away a $100 Visa gift card plus a year’s supply of Wonder bread (that’s 52 coupons for one free loaf of Wonder® Classic White or Wonder® Classic White Sandwich bread) to one lucky Salsa reader. To enter, leave me a comment below and tell me your favorite kind of sandwich to make with Wonder bread (either now or when you were a kid).

Wow. First comment on Salsa. That's unheard of. We make lots of sandwiches around here, but on Wonder bread, there's nothing better than a good old PB&J. A close runner-up would be grilled cheese with cheddar and slices of granny smith apples, though.

What a huge giveaway!

I am a sucker for grilled cheese sandwiches on Wonder. Lightly spread mayo (yup, mayo) on both sides of the bread. Use 1.5 slices of American cheese because that is what is needed to cover every inch of bread. Lightly sprinkle with pepper and grill in a pan with a pat of butter. I'm hungry!

Unknown said...

It has to be grilled cheese-with the cheese slices wrapped in plastic.

Wonder Bread is ideal for 2 kinds of sandwiches. 1st, your everyday PB and banana sandwhich. YUM. But 2nd is my fav, the leftover Thanksgiving sandwich. Wonderbread, mayo, turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, all smooshed together and heated in the microwave for 20 secs. It's my FAVORITE sandwich of all time.

Sam said...

I LOVE fresh tomato, mayo, and cheese sandwiches in the summer!!!! They are messy and yummy!!! They taste like summer. AND they only taste good on white bread.

My son Cullen (almost 13 years-old) is addicted to peanut butter, Simply Fruit blackberry, and cayenne pepper sandwiches (again on white bread). You seriously have to try it!!!

Kieren is only happy with real butter on white bread. She isn't really into food.

I had two favorite sandwiches to make with white bread as a kid. Well, the first one is a real sandwich it was Wonder Bread, Oscar Meyer's bologna, and Kraft American cheese with a thin layer of Best Food Mayonnaise (no, I'm not getting paid to drop names, they just had to be these brands otherwise I could taste the difference). I also liked to make "sandwiches" of white bread with mayonnaise in between. Then I'd pull off a chunk and smash it between my fingers until it was a little dense bit and pop it in my mouth and eat. Yum. Haven't done either in a verrrrry long time.
BTW, you can reach me at cgwms [at] yahoo [dot] com if I win. Thanks for letting me recant a sweet memory.

Jenna said...

I guess I am just boring... I still love classic PB&J... especially on soft white bread. It always has to be strawberry jam and it is also best when the bread is toasted and the pb is starting to melt... yummy!

Warren Dew said...

That has to be the cutest taste test ever. I liked the way Ro barely touched the spinach with her tongue, and I'm not sure Ree actually tasted the spinach at all - I guess the smell was enough.

I don't really eat sandwiches any more, but as a kid, I envied the kids who got tuna sandwiches, because I generally got bologna, which I didn't care for.

livieandhermommies said...

First the sandwich vote - for my 6 yr old it is nothing but lightly toasted Wonder Bread with PB!!

Now a suggestion if I may :
Cook 2 C. Rice in chicken stock per pkge directions. Saute lightly 1/2 sweet onion in olive oil, add to this 1 pkge Frozen spinach (squeeze out all water first) & add Salt & pepper to taste. Mix this with you completed rice...
THE ONLY WAY my child eats spinach! Goes well with Chicken, burgers, or pork chops.!

Molly's Mom said...

PBJ...peanutbutter on both sides of the bread, so the jelly won't squish through the bread making it turn all soggy and purple. And grape jelly. Only grape jelly.

PB and potato chip. Sounds odd but I love the sweet/salty combo with the crunch!

Wonder bread oh how I love it. The best comfort food known to me ( next to chocolate); take two fresh slices of bread, spoonful of creamy peanut butter, take a large scoop of the home made strawberry freezer jam( made by your 13 year old daughter with love) mix the pb and j together, spread out on one side of the bread. Top with the other slice of heaven (the bread) and totally enjoy the sandwich that makes you feel like a kid again.

Our family loves Ham and Cheese with potato chips in between.

growing up, it might have been salami. Now, I think it is grilled cheese, with a twist. I put thinly sliced bell peppers or onion and somtimes herbs or spices inside.

Hmmm, can't remember the last time I've had Wonder bread. I guess I always felt it was not as good for you, but I guess things have changed. I would love to give it another try with peanut butter and banana!
